Our Platform

My name is Dave Williams and I am running for President of SGA, and my running mate is Andy Adair.

I have served SGA for two school years, my first as a student Senator and my second as a Justice for the J-Board. I was involved with the creation of the new constitution that SGA will be under for next semester, and I will be able to provide leadership that will guarantee a smooth transition. I have always advocated for fiscal responsibility, as well as, advocating for lower student fees. If elected, I will continue to fight for those principles.

I would like to create a new "Parking Advisory" committee to address the issue of parking and parking fees. In addition I would like to specifically address why students who live in the dorm will now be forced to buy permits even if they don't own cars; I think that is wrong.

I would also like to implement a "Rent-a-Book" program for the bookstore so that students could rent a certain textbook a professor might assign for only a short time or if students can't afford to buy books at all. I would also like to stop the bookstore from selling newer edition textbooks that don't have any worthy change.

I would like to create a "Club Incentive" program that would reward clubs for hosting and having events on campus. Currently, clubs are capped out on the amount of money they can receive from the SGA, and I feel that clubs should be rewarded for hosting and holding events. These events help crush the apathy that runs wild here at UCCS.

Part of my "Dream" goals would be to try and get the 2008 Presidential candidates(McCain and Obama or Clinton) to come and debate at UCCS for the next fall semester.

I would say that experience, commitment, and passion are the differences between us and our opponents. Thank you,Dave and Andy

Dream goal might be a little lofty though. Meaning that you want to think about leaving that one out as it makes you seem a little out of touch with practical situations and the ability to follow-through. Just saying...could you actually devote the time and resources necessary to bring a presidential candidate to this campus? I imagine just convincing their respective staffers to entertain the notion would involve a workload that resembles a full-time job. Either way, you did state it was a dream goal, so kudos to you. If you're gonna dream, dream BIG, right?

Love the idea of lowering parking pass fees ;), but do you have any specifics on how you plan to accomplish this? A concrete path towards this goal would alone be enough to "stump" on. It is one of the biggest sources of frustration for just 'bout everyone here on campus.

The Rent-a-book idea is a good, but one that might be better suited outside of an auxiliary University entity. You don't want to go head-to-head with the publishing industry just yet do you ;)? Not to mention that the Bookstore would likely have to shoulder the burden of purchasing all those copies for rent and with no one buying them they'd lose money. Not a lot of incentive for them to engage in a non-money making endeavor. Keep in mind the bookstore is not part of the University system, but rather an outside entity on University property. They are in it for the money (One could argue that so is the "U").

As for the "Clubs Incentive", in my experience here on campus (3 years as a student and 2 as a staff member), these clubs only cater to those interested in them. Which is the way a club should be. A/V members are into A/V, and the Glee club is into whatever they're into, but the point is that clubs inherently attract people into what those clubs are about. If you want to combat the apathy here on campus focus on the entire student body, not on specific subsets (i.e. clubs), otherwise you're no better than those subsets. Look at the SnowRiders past as well as the Sooper Sporkers Society for past examples. These groups cater to themselvs and serve their own interests, not those of the campus or the student body at large. In my humble opinion I'd start with those folks that live here...focus on the dorms, the housing village. Try for a live band near the pub...local and/or college bands generally salivate for exposure and typically would be cheaper and easier than funding/rewarding numerous clubs or bringing a presidential candidate here.

Either way, these are just some initial reactions. Best of luck. Dream as you will. All the best,

-Chris

Chris, you make very good points. As far as my "dream" goal goes, you're right it’s a lofty idea, but I'm committed to trying it. I'd probably have to work with CU Boulder to accomplish such a tall order though.

With regards to parking, there is no direct action I can take to lower parking. If the position I was running for allowed me to do so, I would. The best I can do right now is to set up a student lead committee to help address and advise. The other thing I can do is stop Public Safety from increasing fees up to ten percent, with a vote of the students.

As for going head-to-head with the publishing industry, why not? It's either that or attend meetings of SGA and hand out free food once in awhile.

My biggest problem with the way the system works is that we as student leaders don't do anything of importance, or even try. Once in awhile there are some things that get done (like the grade forgiveness policy Brandon James pushed through) but the majority of the time SGA does nothing. UCCS needs open dialog like this, we need people who are willing to shake things up.

All I'm saying is, why not try something? Things would be, at least, a little more interesting.

Dave, I have a few questions as well. First, what is Andy's take on this? How will you guys work as a team with the SGA? And what are you going to do to lower gas prices? Chill
